Maki-e Fountain Pen
宝尽くし - Takara Zukushi
Collection of Treasures
At the end of October 2017, we are going to release the Collection of Treasures, one of Wancher Maki-e fountain pen collections. Inspired by the beauty of natural creatures. 宝尽くし - Takara Zukushi collection pictures different special treasures in our natures on to the fountain pen.
Maki-e technique: Vietnamese A Maki-e which is quite similar to first step of Togidashi Maki-e 肉合研出蒔絵 (Burnished Maki-e) in Japan. The traditional paint was mixed with metal powder and sparkling powder to create desired paint colors then hand paintings were applied repeatedly until the perfect color is achieved. This is followed by the final coat to make the surface shiny and glossy.
Why A Maki-e
Vietnamese traditional maki-e paint is only available in 10 colors which are mostly prone to black and red shades. Thus, it is normally hard for artists to clearly show the real colors of objects. In order to solve this problem, our artists mixed the traditional paint with metal powder and sparkling paint to achieve the final colors which are similar to the real object but still keep high-quality texture of the traditional paint. After hand-painting onto the pen, a layer transparent lacquer is applied to keep the painting in place and shiny afterwards.
Cranes in the seasons
宝尽くし鶴 - Takara Zukushi Tsuru features cranes in different seasons. Cranes have been known as the most popular symbols in Asian arts and this time we used our maki-e techniques to show you this beautiful treasures from Asia. Cranes with rising sun in summer, cranes with growing leaves in spring and cranes in non-breeding season winter are amazingly presented by hand-painting with a shiny look by a lacquer layer.
Our Maki-e Artists
After the pens were assembled in Japan, we brought it all the way back to Vietnam for Maki-e painting, and the whole process took almost 4 months. We traveled back to Ha Thai village in Hanoi, Vietnam and it was a great pleasure to have one of the most famous maki-e artists in Hanoi to make these beautiful maki-e painting.
